Reporter Frank X. Mullen to channel Dan DeQuille in Gold Hill lecture

Journalist Frank X. Mullen will present “Dan DeQuille: The Washoe Giant” on March 3 at the Gold Hill Hotel’s Friday Night Showcase.

DeQuille was a compatriot of Sam Clemens, aka Mark Twain, when both worked at the Territorial Enterprise in the 1860s. However, unlike Twain, DeQuille stayed on the Comstock for more than 30 years, and didn’t achieve the fame of his fellow journalist Twain.

Mullen is a Reno-based investigative journalist, author and university instructor and chautauqua scholar. The author of “The Donner Party Chronicles,” he has appeared as a historian in History Channel series and other cable programs.

Mullen has taught journalism classes at University of Nevada, Reno since 1998 and has twice been named Nevada’s Outstanding Journalist by the Nevada Press Association. He lectures about Nevada history and performs at chautauqua festivals in several states.

The event, which will include dramatic readings of DeQuille’s letters, will be at 7:30 p.m. at the hotel, 1540 Main St., Gold Hill. Dinner is 4-8 p.m. at the hotel’s Crown Point Restaurant.

The cost is $25 for the dinner and lecture and $10 for the show only. Reservations are recommended, but not required.
