Department of Motor Vehicles investigators used computer software to identify and capture a criminal who escaped federal prison in 1992.
Robert Frederick Nelson, 64, of North Las Vegas, was imprisoned in Minnesota after being convicted of violent felonies. When he applied for renewal of his Nevada identification card in June, facial recognition software identified him as the same person who held a license under the name of Craig James Paulter. Investigators found out he was arrested in the late 1980s on multiple counterfeiting charges. He escaped from the federal medical center prison in Rochester, Minn., in 1992. He was arrested June 20 at the DMV Decatur office in Las Vegas.
He has since been extradited by the federal Bureau of Prisons to serve the rest of his federal sentence.
