Stocks keep climbing

Stock markets around the world may have ripened to full-slip sweetness this year. Emerging markets have delivered the most attractive returns year-to-date. The MSCI Emerging Markets Index was up 34 percent year-to-date, last week. The United States and Europe have marched higher, too. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index was up about 16 percent year-to-date, while the Euro Stoxx Index was up 11.3 percent, reported Barron’s and The Wall Street Journal.

Recently at the dog park we were discussing Thanksgiving and the wonderful holiday food. Of course pumpkin pie came up, and Wayne mentioned that he gave a bit of pumpkin to his dogs every day. He had read that it helps with their digestion, and he firmly believes it does. His dogs are healthy and happy.

Gaming win flat in October, except at South Shore

Nevada gaming numbers were flat in October both statewide and in western Nevada markets. Gaming Control Board Analyst Mike Lawton said this October was going up against a very strong comparison since October 2016 was up more than 11 percent.

Man arrested after allegedly throwing child to the ground, says Carson City Sheriff’s Office

The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All are considered innocent until proven guilty in court. TUESDAY At 1:18 p.m., a 20-year-old Carson City man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of contempt of court, suspended registration and no valid proof of insurance after deputies initiated a traffic stop near John and Carson streets. Bail was set at $1,335.

Police kill gunman with hostage in Reno condo

RENO — A gunman took a woman hostage and opened fire on a downtown Reno street from the eighth floor of a condominium, stirring initial fears of another massacre like the one in Las Vegas, police said Wednesday. The unidentified gunman, who apparently knew the female hostage, was fatally shot by police Tuesday night. The woman was not hurt and no one else was seriously injured.

The Oakland Athletics have hired former San Francisco Giants star Matt Williams as their new third base coach. The A’s announced Friday that Williams will join manager Bob Melvin’s staff. Melvin was a coach in Arizona for two seasons late in Williams’ career with the Diamondbacks.

Nevada senators back bill to fix gun background check law

Nevada’s U.S. senators have issued statements backing a new bill to fix flaws in the existing firearms background checks law. Republican Sen. Dean Heller said the National Instant Criminal Background Check System will require state and federal agencies to quickly and accurately report criminal history records to the system and penalize federal agencies that fail to do so.

Gardnerville woman held on 11 felonies, according to Carson City Sheriff’s Office

A Gardnerville woman was ordered held in lieu of $25,000 bail on a list of 11 felony counts. Mindy Jean Newberg-Frontino, 34, surrendered to deputies at the Carson City Jail on Thursday. She faces one charge of possession of a false ID for the purpose of theft/credit fraud.

Fallon track and field team selling Christmas trees

The Fallon track and field team is having its 16th annual Christmas tree fundraiser, beginning on Dec. 2 at 11 a.m. in front of Louie’s Home Center. The popular fundraiser usually sells out of trees during the first weekend. Trees are freshly cut and farm grown from Oregon. All Douglas firs up to 8 feet tall are $40. Noble firs up to 8 feet tall are $60. Larger trees are available for an extra charge. Local delivery is available, but supplies are limited.

The Board of Examiners voted Tuesday to add another $10 million to the contract to develop and implement the Health Care Reform Eligibility Engine. Steve Fisher, head of the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services, told the board this is the final phase of the Affordable Care Act project and will ensure Nevada meets the requirements of that legislation.

Taxable sales up 9 percent in Carson City

Statewide taxable sales notched a 3.3 percent increase in August over the same month of 2016, a total of $4.77 billion. Churchill County had a banner month, growing total sales 17.2 percent to $25.9 million. The big increases there were in the Utilities category where sales nearly quadrupled to $1.94 million and Specialty Trade Contractors where the increase was 84 percent to $1.12 million.

Carson City gaming win up 4th straight month

hurchill County was hit by a decrease in game and table win in September. That category fell 20.69 percent but table games make up just a tiny part of Churchill’s overall gaming win. Slot win totaled $1.59 million compared to just $63,000 from the tables. Total September win in Churchill was $1.66 million, a 1.69 percent increase.

TRIC awaits plan for link to reclaimed water

A “purple pipe system” that uses reclaimed water from homes and businesses throughout the Truckee Meadows could provide a big boost to sustainability efforts for companies at Tahoe Reno Industrial Center east of Sparks. There’s still a lot of infrastructure to put into play, but TRIC developer Lance Gilman says he’s in the process of establishing contracts to import 4,000 acre feet of water from the Truckee Meadows Water Reclamation Facility in east Sparks. It’s the largest sustainability project currently underway at TRIC — although that could soon change.

A rivalry will be reborn today in Boise. The Nevada Wolf Pack football team will renew its 46-year-old battle with the Boise State Broncos today (4 p.m.) when the two Mountain West foes meet on the blue turf of Albertsons Stadium.
