Churchill County residents are invited to come out to enjoy the fall weather next week, for the Churchill County Parks and Recreation Department’s annual Turkey Trot 5k.
The event begins Nov. 18 at 10 a.m. with registration opening at 9 a.m. at the Fallon Convention Center. The 5k is broken into age groups of 13 and under, 14-20, 21-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65, and 66 and over. The overall first place finishers in each group will receive a frozen turkey; 1st, 2nd and 3rd place males and females will also receive a medal.
All participants also will receive a long sleeve event shirt. People who register by today will have their size guaranteed, though people registering after are subject to availability.
Registration for the event costs $20 per person or $70 for a family of four — all the members must be related — and $25 the day of the event.
According to Jorge Guerrero, director of the Parks and Recreation Department, they have usually had around 100 participants.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Wishing Tree Program of the Churchill County Social Services Department. The program accepts donations to help buy gifts for less fortunate children during the holidays. The Parks and Recreation Department also will accept school supplies — No. 2 pencils, erasers, highlighters, paper, etc. — to donate to Churchill County School District’s Students in Transition Program.
There also will be raffle prizes drawn during the event. Guerrero said they will have turkeys, turkey dinners and other prizes available to be drawn.
