Lady Bighorns sweep Eureka

Oasis Academy swept a doubleheader Friday from visiting Eureka, 16-0 and 15-6, to improve its record to 14-0.

Freshman Emily Payne shut out the Lady Vandals in a no-hitter. The only blemish to her game was issuing a walk.

The Lady Bighorns gave Payne all the support she needed with four runs in the first inning. Faith Myers key hit drove in two runs, while Payne also had an RBI.

Oasis erupted for 12 runs in the second inning of the shortened game, called because of the 15-un rule after three innings. The Bighorns scored most of their runs on walks with the bases loaded. Callie Perez had an RBI double, and Payne drove in a run with a bloop single.

Eureka pitching walked 16 batters.

Oasis and Eureka came out swinging in the first inning of the second game.

Cammie Skinner put Eureka on the scoreboard first with a run-producing single after Shawna Brown doubled with one out.

The Bighorns responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Oasis loaded the bases, Payne popped out after the infield fly rule was called.

Two throwing errors, though, led to the Bighorns clearing the bases, and a hit batter with the bases loaded accounted for the fourth run.

Eureka tied the game in the second inning with three runs. Brown, Jenises Dominguez and Skinner each drove in a run off starting pitcher Angelena Leal. Payne came in and retired the side.

Oasis took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Callie Perez’s single inside the third-base line drove in a run, and Erin Wachsmuth’s infield hit drove in another. The Bighorns scored a run on a wild pitch.

Eureka scored a run in each of the third and fourth innings to trail 7-6. Savannah Sanders drove in a run with a single in the third, and Mikala Talbot’s double resulted in the Vandals’ final run.

The Lady Bighorns erupted for eight runs in the fourth inning. Jazmine Perez walked with the bases loaded to score a run. Payne singled in two more run, and Meagan Trinidad’ grounder resulted in another run.

Several errors a hit batter led to Oasis other runs. As with the first game, Eureka pitching issued 12 walks.

Payne picked up the win for Oasis.
