Roundup: Payne pitches perfect game, no hitter as Bighorns stay undefeated

Emily Payne pitched a perfect game in Oasis Academy’s 21-0 win over Mineral County as the Bighorns swept the Serpents in Hawthorne on Tuesday.

The Bighorns improved to 10-0 and hosted Smith Valley on Tuesday to conclude the regular season. Playoffs begin next week.
In the 21-0 Game 1 win, Payne struck out six.

Erin Wachsmuth led the team at the plate with a four-hit performance. Kate Rios drove in four on three hits, including a triple and home run, and Callie Perez and Elisabeth Bird each drove in three on three hits. Kaitlyn Hert also had three hits and drove in two. Perez double twice and Payne and Hert each had one double.

In the second game, which Oasis Academy won 16-0, Payne threw a no-hitter while striking out six. She allowed no walks.

Rios dominated the plate again with three hits, including a triple, and one RBI, and Herts had two hits and one RBI. Perez drove in four runs and doubled once, and Eneyde Rio had one hit and two RBIs.

Lacrosse
Oasis Academy’s girls lacrosse team stayed perfect on the season with wins over Reno and Damonte Ranch. No statistics were available.
The girls team travels to McQueen on Friday and then faces Bishop Manogue on Monday in Reno.

The boys team, though, fell to Reno, 14-4, and Galena, 14-0.

For the season, Chris Ehlers is leading the team with 13 goals in seven games and has a .295 shooting perentage. Cole Hamlin is second with eight goals and second in shooting average at .320. Sam Robertson is third with seven goals and has a .269 shooting percentage, while Seth Dunkin leads the team with a .375 shooting percentage and three interceptions.

Oasis Academy faced Damonte Ranch at the county fields on Tuesday for Senior Day and then travels to Douglas on Thursday.
