Darrell Moody: A nice finish for Amaral, Douglas High

It was great Don Amaral coached his Douglas Tigers on Thursday in the regular-season finale against Carson.

The Tigers ended their season in impressive fashion, scoring 11 times in the sixth inning to wipe out a 9-0 deficit and beat the Senators, 11-10.

Amaral was hit in the forehead by a foul ball in the first inning of Carson’s playoff-clinching win Wednesday against Douglas. Amaral, after being attended to by CHS trainer Adam Hunsaker, went to a local hospital for X-rays and further treatment.

He received eight stitches, according to Hunsaker.

Carson coach Bryan Manoukian said Amaral never saw the ball. Manoukian said it was the scariest thing he’d ever seen on the baseball field.

Amaral greeted the team when it arrived back in Minden late Wednesday night.

According to reports, prep basketball standout Jordan Brown from Prolific Prep in Napa, decided to cancel his official visit to Nevada this weekend.

Brown, a McDonald’s All-American, has already visited St. John’s, UCLA, Louisiana Lafayette and Cal. He is expected to choose between Cal, Nevada and Arizona very shortly.

Brown is keeping options open on his fifth official visit. He could choose Nevada or Arizona or that final visit.

The 6-10 Brown has already visited Nevada twice in an unofficial category, meaning he paid his own expenses. He went to Woodcreek High in Roseville before transferring to Prolific Prep.

The five-star recruit is probably a one and done player, according to recruiting services. Brown’s father liked the St. John’s program after visiting the campus and talking to Chris Mullin, former NBA great with the Golden State Warriors.

Various recruiting services have had Cal and UCLA at the top of Brown’s list during most of the recruiting process. Nevada has always been in the top 10, but interest has soared since the NCAA Tournament.

That isn’t surprising. Nevada and coach Eric Musselman are “hot.” Nevada is considered to be a top-10 team in preseason rankings. Of course that is based on the Pack keeping Caleb and Cody Martin, and Jordan Caroline, all of whom are dipping their toes into the NBA draft process. None have signed an agent yet which is a good thing. The Martins will participate in the NBA Combine.

If Brown eventually signs with Nevada somebody may have to go. With the signing of grad transfer Trey Porter from Old Dominion, had reached its limit on scholarships.

If the Pack loses a player before Brown signs, there is no problem. If they don’t, somebody’s scholarship may not be renewed. Who knows, maybe there is a way to have somebody move to an academic scholarship for a school year to clear the space.

And a belated congratulations to former Sierra Lutheran standout Nathanael Williams, who won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference 10,000-meter championship.

Williams was timed in 31:29.42, a shade more than five seconds ahead of teammate Ben Schneiderman.

It’s a shame that Nevada’s track can’t be used for college meets or even big AAU meets. Have school officials at Nevada ever thought about holding something at Carson? AAU officials?

The facility is certainly good enough and big enough to host a college meet. It could be a money maker for the city, too, especially an AAU meet.
