Prep Roundup: Carson volleyball tops Manogue in five sets

Carson High senior Abby Pradere was a freshman the last time the Senators knocked off the Bishop Manogue volleyball team.

That was before Wednesday night.

Pradere, a senior, and the young Senators showed a lot of fight, forcing a fifth and deciding game before coming away with a four-point 15-11 game 5 victory.

Pradere’s ability to keep the Senators in some crucial points, along with the outside hitting of freshman Grace Turner (.400) and senior Shea DeJoseph (.417) had coach Robert Maw enthusiastic about the strides the Senators made.

“When we are scrambling, I never worry,” Maw said. “With Abby on the floor, she just has the ability to make some un-natural saves.”

Manogue fell to 18-5 overall and 2-1 in league.

“It was nice to see a young group of girls be able to handle five sets of pressure,” Maw said. “They did what I have been hoping for. I am really proud of them all. It was a team win tonight.

“They learned how to play as one.”

Maw said he made a lineup change putting Camryn Quilling at libero to allow Camille Kordonowy to help the Senators passing.

“Camryn hasn’t played libero before, but I knew they would both make a positive impact so we went with it. And it made a huge difference in our fighting,” Maw said. “We fought well tonight.”

Carson had a 21-15 lead in the first game before the Miners closed the lead to 21-19. Carson made it 22-19, before Manogue would make it 22-21. Carson scored on a block by Carissa Willey. Manogue would then end the game on a four-point run.

“I could sense in the first game that we could play these guys,” Maw said. “We should have had game 1 and we should have had game 3. We were there. They didn’t have an answer to our willingness to fight.”

In game 2, Carson took a 12-11 game and turned it into an 18-11 game with Raymie Brooks serving. The teams went back and forth before Carson closed it out on a four-point run, the momentum was started by a dig by Pradere.

Game 3, saw Manogue with a 20-14 lead, the Senators crawled back to tie the game at 21 with Brooks at the serve. Manogue would close it out on a four-point run.

In the fourth game, Carson showed its most fight yet. The Senators’ defense kept them in key points. The teams traded points with the Senators holding an 18-15 lead. With Brooks once again at the serve, Carson went on a four-point run to take a 22-15 lead. The final point was a kill by Pradere. Earlier in the point, she made another “un-natural” save. Carson was able to force the deciding game winning, 25-20.

Pradere had five kills, 38 assists and 12 digs. Brooks had six aces at the serve. Quilling had 23 digs in her first full-game at libero. DeJoseph had five aces and 12 kills. Turner had 17 kills and eight digs.

“That was a huge night, playing Bishop Manogue,” Maw said about Turner. “In game 5, handled the pressure great.”

Notes: All 5 games were won on the “visiting” side of Morse Burley Gym.

Carson fell against Damonte Ranch 13-25, 17-25, 25-15, 13-25 on Thursday and is now 12-5 and 2-2 in league.

Carson golfers second at Genoa

The Carson High girls golf team had an encouraging effort without one of its two top golfers on Tuesday at Genoa.

Carson finished second to Manogue in the Sierra League Tournament, but was without Jill Beglin. Jill and her sister, Karen Beglin, have been the league’s top two players throughout the season.

Karen Beglin was again the low score medalist on Tuesday, firing a 77.

CHS finished at 397 while Manogue won at 356. Sarah Wiggins and Sophia Taggert also shot solid rounds for Carson as Wiggins broke 100 with a 99 and Taggert fired a 102.

Gabby Montes was Carson other scorer with a 119. Also for Carson, Karrina Ferris shot a 123 and Kassidy Cooley had a 141.

CHS boys soccer wins

Carson beat Manogue 2-0 at home on Wednesday. Ricky Gonzlez and Omar Mora scored for the Senators. Carson’s junior varsity boys also beat Manogue 8-2.

CHS girls tennis falls to Douglas

Carson again couldn’t quite pull off the comeback against Douglas when it trailed 5-1 after the first round on Thursday. Carson was also hurt when it had to forfeit three doubles matches.

In the first round, Alex Knowlton and Isela Rodriguez were picked up Carson’s only win 6-3 in doubles.

Carson six of the next 10 matches contested. Sydney Lloyd moved to singles and won 6-1, Rachel Fenzke won and Jennifer Artz won 6-0 in singles in the second round.

in the final round, Lloyd and Fenzke won 6-0 in the final round in singles while Knowlton and Rodriguez won 7-6 (7-4) in doubles.

Carson (1-7-1) fell to Manogue 3-0 on Tuesday.
