Fallon rallies for an 11-8 win over Elko

The Lady Wave softball team rallied from a 5-0 deficit against visiting Elko in an 11-8 win Friday afternoon at the Edward Arciniega Athletic Complex and then fell to Elko 13-9 on Saturday.

Fallon had won 26 straight games against Elko dating back to 2008. Elko is 8-2 in the Northern 3A, while Fallon drops to 3-3, 4-7 overall. Fallon played a nonleague game at Reed on Tuesday and travels to Sparks for league play with single games on Friday and Saturday.

After a quiet first inning in Friday’s opener for both longtime rivals, Elko jumped on Fallon’s starting pitcher Gaby Winkler for three runs. The Fallon sophomore gave up a long single to Breanna Whitted to being the inning, and then she followed up with a walk to Jacqueline Pete.

Kaitlyn Rizo’s bunt loaded the bases. With one out, Avery Jorgenson bounced into a fielder’s choice that scored Elko’s first run, and an infield error allowed two more runs to cross the plate. A throwing error past third base led to Elko’s fourth run, and Lauryn Guenin finished the visitors’ scoring with an RBI double off the first pitch.

Rizo had the hot bat for Elko with three hits

Fallon, though, showed grit in the bottom of the second to cut Elko’s lead to three runs. With two outs, Shelbi Schultz doubled, and Jhada Ramsey ripped a two-run homer over the centerfield fence.

Winkler settled down in the third inning, wiggling out of the inning despite giving up a pair of singles.

Fallon had a big four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth to take its first lead of the Northern 3A game. The Wave tagged Elko pitcher Kenzi Ratliff with four consecutive hits to open the inning. Ashley Agaman hit a single to right field, and catcher Lorynn Fagg’s blooper fell in shallow left field. Savana Manha’s single drove in Fallon’s third run, while Shaylee Fagg doubled in another run. Ramsey’s two run single gave Fallon a 6-5 lead, the last time the Wave trailed.

Manha scored a run in the fifth inning. She opened the inning with a double. Elko, though, tied the game on an error and fielder’s choice.

Fallon had another big inning with four runs in the sixth.

Freshman Shaylee Coldwell launched a solo, first-pitch home run for an 8-7 lead. Aspen Mori reached base on an error, and Fagg beat out an infield hit to put runners on first and second. Manha, who had three hits in the game, rode an opposite-field hit that barely cleared the fence for a three-run shot to help Fallon to an 11-7 lead.

Lexi Schweer’s double drove in Elko’s final run in the seventh.

Winkler settled down over the final five innings in scattering three runs and relying on her defense to keep Elko from having a big inning. She finished with four strikeouts

The Lady Indians stranded 11 batters. Fallon outhit Elko 12-10.

Although Fallon out Elko 12-10 in Saturday’s game, the Wave committed five errors.

The Wave had solid hitting from Agaman, Manha and Shaylee Fagg, who each had two hits. Agaman also drove in two runs as did Manha.

Makenzee Moretto scored three of Fallon’s nine runs.

The Wave jumped of Elko for four runs in the first inning and added a run in each of the second, third and fourth innings. Trailing 7-5, Elko erupted for six runs in the tip of the fifth and added two more in the seventh.

Emery Lesbo and Rizo each homered for Elk, and between them, the drove in seven runs. Lesbo also led the Indians with four hits.

Rylee Ferguson pitched in relief for Elko and picked up the win, awhile Agaman took the loss for Fallon.
