Sudden Death — We are painted to learn from last evening’s Gold Hill News, that Capt. A.M. Kirkpatrick, who held the position of Assistant Clerk of the last Assembly, died in that place yesterday of some disease of the brain. His death was very sudden, and his loss will be mourned by a large circle of friends.

A Mysterious Noise. A few evenings since a young man was calling on a young lady of this city, when when he was quite puzzled by the mysterious tinkling of little bells. He finally asked where those “darned bells were,” and the girl merely blushed and said nothing. The next day the young lady’s brother told the youth that his sister wore bells on her garters.

Reports from the northern part of Elko county are to the effect that rabid coyotes are causing much havoc in that section and heavy losses to the stockmen and farmers. Very frequently some one is compelled to go to Reno to spend twenty-one days making the Pasteur treatment as a precaution against infection.

Mrs. Franklin d. Roosevelt Jr., arrived by plane today in Reno to establish a six-weeks Nevada residence to divorce the son of the late President Roosevelt. The former Ethel DuPont, a member of the immensely wealthy Delaware munitions family, went immediately to a Washoe Valley dude ranch where she will stay until the action is filed.

A measure to liberalize Nevada’s abortion law was defeated today in the State Assembly by the narrowest margin after one Assemblyman Virgil Ghetto, R-Fallon, changed his vote at the end of the roll call.

Retail James Cash Penney, founder of the J.C. Penney’s chain, would probably have found Carson City’s Janice Ayres to measure up to his idea a worth. Ayres was named the J.C. Penney Trophy for Outstanding Director of a Volunteer Agency.

Captain William Wallace has become the proprietor of the Warm Springs Hotel, and he has refitted it in excellent style, throughout, bathing rooms and all. Visitors from Virginia and elsewhere would miss a good thing if they fail to visit the Warm Springs.

The Quarantine Lifted. Yesterday the Kaiser family were allowed to leave the Ormsby House and go to their private residence. Last evening the yellow flags which have marked the house so long, were taken down by the authorities.

Humboldt’s New Court House. The board of commissioners at the meeting Saturday accepted the preliminary plans of Architect F.J. DeLongchamps for the new county courthouse at a cost of $100,000 to $130,000.

Much interest locally will hinge on the outcome of a meeting planned in Carson City by the state planning board for the final selection as to where the new $870,000 state highway building is to be constructed.

A Carson City man has received city council approval to operate pony rides — complete with carousel top and sawdust ring — on the parking lot opposite of the Nugget.

After three hours of impassionate pleading from young homeowners, the Board of Supervisors Thursday night reversed an earlier decision requiring a developer to widen two streets in Stanton Park Subdivision.

“Pish,” — Neighbor Dyer, the stage manager, presented us yesterday with a small whale — not so small either — from the Truckee. He came nicely sewn up in a gunny-bag coffin. He made a square and splendid meal. From the depths of a full stomach we thank him.

Ben Taylor’s boot-black stand at the Magnolia is a great favorite. Ben is never there, and the patrons of the stand black their own boots, but drop no nickel in the slot.

United States Marshal McEachin left for Reno last night to serve summons on witnesses in the W.A. Gowling white slave case, who will be tried in Sacramento next week. Gowling is charged with bringing a woman from Westwood, Ca., to Reno in violation of federal statute.

The Orphanage softball team, entered in a grammar school loop composed of western Nevada schools, will meet the Douglas aggregation in a game there tomorrow afternoon. Jack Batchelder will probably get the starting mound assignment.

The Carson JayCees have asked the city council for permission to hold separate weekend dances for high school and junior high school age youngsters at the civic auditorium.

Naval Air Station Fallon officials on Friday presented a $550 million request to meet the station’s training needs through 1995.
