Picking up trash at WNC is just one of several events planned during Earth Week on April 22-26 at the college. Participants in the Trash Mob campus cleanup event have the opportunity to win a free 3-credit class.
Western Nevada College is joining the rest of the world in celebrating environmental protection of the Earth the week of April 22.
Here’s how WNC’s Healthy Campus Committee is planning to celebrate Earth Week from April 22 through April 26:
April 22: Trash Mob! Kick off Earth Week with a campus cleanup! 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Rotary Plaza: The WNC Campus Community is encouraged to stop by Rotary Plaza to pick up garbage bags, then walk around campus and pick up trash and plant debris. Any trash and debris collected can be unloaded at any of the drop-off locations. Each person who picks up trash receives a raffle ticket to win any number of prizes. Top prize is a free 3-credit class.
April 23: “Bee Hotels, Bee Cities and How Carson City Is Buzzing Its Way to Better Health,” presented by the Carson City Chamber leadership class; Carson Tahoe Health; Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space; Southwest Gas; and the Greenhouse Project, Reynolds 103 at 5:30 p.m.
April 25: “What We Can Do about Climate Change,” presented by the Nevada Green Initiative, Reynolds 103 at 6 p.m.
April 26: “The Geology of Great Basin National Park,” presented by WNC Geology Professor Winnie Kortemeier, Marlette Hall, 7 p.m.
Note: Throughout the week there will be tables in the Bristlecone spine area with various groups providing information for the campus and the community.
New WNC Students Can Begin Registering for Fall on April 15
Individuals who plan to attend Western Nevada College for the first time in the fall can begin registering for classes on Monday, April 15.

Anyone who’s planning to attend WNC for the first time can apply for admission at www.wnc.edu/starthere/.

WNC Cisco Technology Instructor Recognized
Western Nevada College Cisco Technology adjunct instructor Landrin Long has been recognized by the Cisco Networking Academy as an advanced level instructor.
Long has been honored for his accomplishments and contributions to the Cisco Networking Academy, as well as for ranking in the top 25 percent of instructors globally in student feedback and performance.
Long will be listed with other instructors who have received awards on the Cisco Networking Academy recognition program page and will receive a certificate of achievement from the academy.
Student Art Show Coming to Main Gallery on April 15
The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display for a month this spring.
The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown from April 15 through May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.
A reception and awards ceremony for the artists are planned from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 18.
The exhibit will feature juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third place in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork.
WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
WNC Holding Easter Fiesta on April 20
Easter celebration comes a day early at Western Nevada College.
An egg scramble and a variety of other games and crafts are planned for the annual Easter Fiesta on Saturday, April 20.
Presented by the Second Year Nursing Club at WNC and National Student Nurses Association, the community is invited to join in the fun from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rotary Plaza on the Carson City campus, 2201 W. College Parkway.
Highlights include a 1 p.m. egg scramble on John L. Harvey Field and an opportunity to have your picture taken with the Easter Bunny. There will also be face painting, a coloring contest, piñatas, limbo and musical chairs. Activity tickets are $1 each and $5 for 6.
Proceeds will help pay for graduation and NSNA national convention expenses.
