Carson High track squads show strength at invitational

The Carson High boys and girls track teams continued to post impressive marks at their own Carson Invitational on Saturday.

Carson’s girls finished third in the meet with 74.5 points behind Reed (82) and Spring Creek (95.5). The Senator boys took fourth with 64 points behind Galena (78.5), McQueen (83) and Reed (118.5).

Both the boys and girls teams were able to finish in the top four even though both teams continue to pace themselves as not all of their top athletes competed in all of their best events.

Among the highlights for Carson’s girls was Abby Pradere winning the 800 and 1,600. Pradere won the 800 in 2:16.06 and cruised to the win in the 1,600, winning by more than 16 seconds in 5:14.07.

Ashley Britt continued her outstanding year for CHS, posting a season best 46.96 in winning the 300 hurdles, finishing ahead of Douglas High’s Megan Veil, who took second in 47.60. Britt also placed third in the 100 hurdles in 17.02.

Carson’s girls also won two relays, the 4x100 and 4x200. Katherine Oppedahl, Erica Basa, Taryn Encinas and Natalyn Wakeling won the 4x100 in 51.33 and Oppedahl, Annika Wick, Encinas and Britt won the 4x200 in 1:48.37.

Also for Carson’s girls, Wakeling took fifth in the 100 in 13.53 and Merce Tarrayo was third in the shot put at 34-1.

Carson swept the 4x400 as Carson’s boys also won the event with Dominic Martinez, Ethan Byasse, Hunter Rauh and Ben Granados winning in 3:32.56.

Rauh also won the 800 in 2:04.00. Zach Sever won the 1600 for CHS in 4:33.67 while Byasse was third in 4;35.33. Sierra Lutheran’s Teagan Hansen was second in 4:33.97.

Jakob Heller had a season best of 41-9 in placing third in the triple jump for the Senator boys. Also for Carson’s boys, Granados was fifth in the 100 in 11.76 and third in the 200 in 23.24. Gryphon Matthies was sixth in the 400 in 54.11 and Carson’s 4x200 relay of Gilbert Vasquez-Polanco, Misrael Becerra, Martinez and Granados were fourth in 1;33.81.
