Unemployment down in all 17 Nevada counties

Nevada’s raw jobless rate went down four tenths of a percent in March to 3.7 percent with just 55,600 of the more than 1.5 million in the workforce seeking employment.

The Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation says statewide, jobs increased by 3.4 percent, the fastest pace in the nation for the sixth consecutive month and double the national rate of 1.7 percent.

Only Caron City experienced a decrease during the month — losing 100 jobs. But Carson is up 1,000 jobs over the year.

The jobless rate in Carson City is 4.1 percent as of the end of March, a reduction of six tenths from February with just 1,100 seeking work in a labor force of 26,100.

Reno-Sparks reported an unemployment rate of just 3.1 percent with 8,100 looking for work out of 258,900. That’s the area’s lowest unemployment rate in 19 years.

In Las Vegas, 3.8 percent of the 1.1 million in the labor force were seeking work — about 41,600 people.

Chief Economist David Schmidt said the report shows unemployment declining in all 17 of Nevada’s counties over the year. He said Carson City’s loss was the result of a seasonal adjustment.

In Churchill County, the unemployment rate fell from 4 percent to 3.5 percent over the month. That translates to just 302 people out of work in a pool of 11,333.

Douglas County’s rate dipped six tenths to 4 percent in March with 902 jobless in a labor force of 22,771.

In Lyon County, 4.9 percent or 1,103 of the 22.544 workers were without a job. But that’s significantly better than February when the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent in Lyon.
