Carson City Juniors All-Star team loses opening game at district tourney

The Carson 10-year-old all-stars overcame a four-run deficit and nearly overcame a five-run deficit. But in the end Carson fell just short in a 10-8 loss to Reno American on Thursday in the District I Little League Tournament at Governors Field.

Carson will play in an elimination game in the championship bracket at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Elijah Reyes didn’t allow an earned run over 3 2/3 innings but Reno made the most of Carson’s mistakes by scoring seven unearned runs against Reyes.

In the second, Reno had runners at second and third with no outs. Reyes induced a popup and struck out the next batter before walking the next batter to load the bases. He then induced a groundball that would have ended the inning but Reno scored on an error on the play to take a 1-0 lead. Reno then scored on a wild pitch and a two-run single to take a 4-0 lead.

Carson responded with three runs in the bottom of the second. Eli Reynolds reached on an error and after Paxton Good and William Humphrey walked, Noah Hutchinson walked to force in a run. Reyes followed with a two-run single to bring Carson to within 4-3.

In the third, Sam Olivas’ two-run single gave Carson a 5-4 lead. But Reno responded with three runs in the fourth to take a 7-5 lead and scored three runs in the sixth go up 10-5.

But Carson fought back after Elijah Larry reached on an infield single and Reynolds followed with a single. Olivas’ RBI infield single pulled Carson to within 10-6 and another run scored on an error. Good, who came in as a pinch runner, drew a threw to third and stole home to pull Carson to within 10-8 but that’s when the rally ended.

Olivas had two hits and three RBI, Reynolds had two hits and Hutchinson added a hit for Carson.

The Carson 11s were eliminated from the championship bracket losing twice by the identical score of 8-5 to Washoe on Thursday and Reno American on Friday.

On Friday, Carson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Ethan Good hit an RBI single to make it 1-0. Nicolas Heald, who had walked, eventually scored on a bad throw to third to make it 2-0.

But Reno came back to tie the score 2-2 in the bottom of the first and took a 3-2 lead in the second. Shortstop Andrew Wilkin nailed a runner trying to score and then Heald, who started on the mound, induced a popup that should have ended the inning. But the popup was misplayed, giving Reno a 4-2 lead.

A popup hit by Julian Pineda in the third led to a wild sequence. Reno misplayed the popup, there was mass confusion, and after all was said and done, Pineda ended up with a single, loading the bases with one out. But Carson couldn’t take advantage.

Reno scored two more unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-2 lead. Heald manufactured a run in the fifth when he walked and advanced to second base. Then he pulled off a delayed steal of third and scored on a bad throw to third to bring Carson to within 6-3.

Reno scored two more unearned runs to take an 8-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Heald allowed two earned runs over four innings and Carson White finished up in relief in the fifth.

In the sixth, Carson pulled to within 8-4 on Shane Robinson’s RBI fielder’s choice. Kaiden Kuhlman then scored on a wild pitch to finish the scoring.

Good had two hits for Carson.

Reno American 18, Carson Juniors 5

Starting pitcher Shasta Lansden deserved a better fate for the Carson Juniors All-Star team in an 18-5 loss to Reno American in the District I Little League Tournament on Wednesday at Governors Field.

Carson will play in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Monday.

Ten of Reno American’s 11 runs in the first two innings were unearned as Reno took an 11-3 lead. Lansden, a 13-year-old, pitching in the 13-14-year-old tournament, struck out six through 2 2/3 innings. Nate McKee did an outstanding job in relief as he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings.

Reno scored three unearned runs in the first to take a 3-0 lead. Carson answered with three runs in the bottom of the first to tie the score 3-3. Landon Martin led off with a walk for Carson and Logan Mulkey followed with a single. After a balk, Martin scored on a wild pitch before Aaron Ramirez went on to walk.

After Ramirez stole second, Lansden helped her own cause with an RBI groundout to pull Carson to within 3-2. Ramirez scored on an error to tie the score 3-3.

In the fifth, Eid Abdelhady singled. Pinch runner Braeden Hudder and Martin pulled off a double steal with Hudder scoring to bring Carson to within 14-4. Martin later was caught in a rundown between third and home but was able to score to bring Carson to within 14-5.
