The Board of Examiners on Tuesday approved issuing a total of $36.75 million in bonds to construct the new south Reno DMV building.
The primary bond amount is $36.1 million to cover the contract with Core Construction Services of Nevada to actually construct the new DMV facility. In addition, there’s a $301,000 contract for architectural and engineering services due to updated building code standards and changes to the design of ventilation, lighting, ducting and drive-through kiosks as well as furniture. That contract went to Kershenow & Klippenstein Architects.
The third piece of the puzzle is $294,780 in bonds to pay Black Eagle Consulting to provide materials testing and inspection services for the building.
The three contracts will be paid for by the bonds that will be paid off by highway fund and pollution control revenues.
The board earlier issued $14.5 million in bonds to begin construction of the building.
The new DMV facility is expected to greatly reduce wait times in the Reno area and officials said it should relieve some of the pressure on the Carson City DMV caused by increasing numbers of Reno residents driving south because wait times are much shorter in Carson City.
The new building facility will replace the greatly overcrowded Galletti Way DMV office in Reno.
