Brewery Arts Center hosts Evening with the Divas in Carson City

The divas are back and are ready to give Carson City goose bumps. The Brewery Arts Center is hosting the second-annual Evening with the Divas on Nov. 2 at the BAC Performance Hall. This year, the event features four Northern Nevada performers: Christina O’Neil Bourne; Cinday Sabatini; Khailiah Cage and Misty Rea.

“A couple of these singers are going to be the best singer most people have ever heard,” Gina Hill said, director of the Brewery Arts Center.

Fundraiser

The event is a fundraiser for The Brewery Arts Center. Last year they raised more than $9,000 at a sold out show, and this year they’re hoping to do better than that, Hill said. She got the idea from the VH1 concert VH1 Divas that started in 1998, and she put on a similar event at the Pioneer Center in Reno in 2000.

“The cool thing about it is, if you get all those great singers in the room, and they’re with other great singers, they’re just going to bring it,” Hill said. “They’re going to bring their best and you’re guaranteed a fantastic show because the bar is so high.”

The atmosphere is a little bit more on the formal side. There are seats and there is space in the front for people to dance.

“We always encourage people to get up and dance, as with all of our shows.”

The Divas

The show is divided into four sets, with each singer getting her own set. Hill said most of the artists know each other and have performed with each other, so there will be duets. Hill also picked women with different styles.

O’Neil Bourne was born and raised in Carson City. She’s a music teacher in Carson City at Mark Twain Elementary. She has more opera and musical theater background.

Sabatini will do some musical theater and most of her songs are a lot of standards, with jazz and rock.

Cage is on the jazz side and fun rock type of stuff, and songs like “Lady Marmalade,” Hill said.

Rea closes the night. She recently had a solo show at the El Dorado on Sept. 24.

“She truly is one of the best singers I’ve ever heard,” Hill said. “She gives you goose bumps every time.”

Other entertainment

Phremium will provide the live music, and KD Sound will take care of the sound, as they do for every BAC event. Phremium learns the setlists the divas put together, and the band performs the songs.

Local comedian Kat Simmons will donate her time as the MC.

“There will be a few surprises along the way,” Hill said.

She said there will be fun dancers and moments. Aerial artist Louisa Lopez (who performed July 20 at the Levitt AMP concert) will be back and she’ll bring more dancers with her.

There will be drinks for sale as well as chocolates.
