Nevada dominates UNLV, takes back Fremont Cannon

Two years was a long enough wait for the Wolf Pack to take back the Fremont Cannon. A career receiving night from Romeo Doubs not only helped earn Nevada the largest rivalry trophy in football, but also let the Wolf Pack leave Las Vegas with a win in the first collegiate football contest played in the new Allegiant Stadium.

JoAnne Skelly: The irrigation dilemma

It’s the annual conundrum. Is it too soon to turn off the irrigation system? With recent nights down to the teens here in Washoe Valley, we turned off the irrigation system and drained it prior to the hard freezes. Then we turned off the outside water and drained the hose bibs too. Yet with temperatures back in the 60s with low to mid-30s at night, I’m sure I will have to irrigate again soon.

Plenty of records and rain in the racing world

A record was set, two records were tied, and racing ran well into the week. Lewis Hamilton’s 92nd win made him the all-time Formula 1 race winner, Scott Dixon tied A.J. Foyt for the most Indy car championships with six, and Kyle Busch tied Jimmy Johnson, Rusty Wallace, and Ricky Rudd with a 16-season consecutive win streak. Only David Pearson at 17 and Richard Petty with 18 have scored higher.

Joe Santoro: UNLV is the season for Nevada Wolf Pack

The Nevada Wolf Pack’s football season is on the line Saturday night in Las Vegas. And we’re not talking about the Mountain West standings. A loss to the UNLV Rebels, after all, certainly would not eliminate the Pack from championship consideration. One loss, especially in Week 2 in the most forgiving conference in the nation, means almost nothing. We’re talking about the Fremont Cannon.

Wishing you all a very happy Halloween, I mean, Nevada Day! (recipe)

Halloween is my favorite holiday — or shall we say, Nevada Day is my favorite holiday! I was born and raised in Carson City, and I participated in the parade every year for the first 14 years of my life. I’ve ridden on firetrucks with my Dad and the folks at Warren Engine Company No. 1, and I’ve marched while playing clarinet with the school band.

They are both great in their own way. It’s just a matter of preference. But just ask yourself one question. Game tied. 10 seconds left. NBA Finals Game 7. Who do you want taking that last shot? Jordan or James? Even James would want Jordan to take that last shot and would pass him the ball.
