The annual Churchill County Junior Livestock Show is going “live” again after presenting a virtual program over the internet last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s show is April 22-24 at the Churchill County Fairgrounds.

The 82nd junior livestock show has remained constant in providing 4-H and FFA students from Churchill County High School and Oasis Academy the opportunity to exhibit skills learned in different areas such as project management, decision-making and project evaluation.

Karen Bogdanowicz, a community-based instructor with the University of Nevada’s Reno Extension program at the fairgrounds, said the format will follow previous shows. On the first day, she said exhibitors will bring their breeding animas for show, and during the evening, market animals will be weighed.

Bogdanowicz said this year’s show and sale consist of swine, sheep, beef, goat and poultry as well as showmanship and all the breeding stock classes. Friday offers the market animal formats, and Saturday includes the show and then the auction at 1 p.m. Prior to the auction at 12:30 p.m., she said there will be a presale of goodies such as cakes and pies.

According to Bogdanowicz, the rabbit show will be held virtually. Judges will grade the students for their showmanship, and the overall winners from each livestock category will be announced on the final day. The auction begins after potential buyers have the morning to look at the animals designated for sale.

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, Bogdanowicz said the buyer’s appreciation dinner will not be held this year, and the “Walked the Town” where students took their animals downtown in early April to solicit support for the livestock show was canceled.

Bogdanowicz reminds the community to practice social distancing at the livestock sale and to war a facial covering in accordance with State of Nevada directives.
