NIAA awards three Senator student-athletes with scholarships

 Three Carson High Student-Athletes awarded scholarships
Tuesday morning, the NIAA announced its One Nevada Ten Student-Athletes of the Year.
Representing the Senators were Karen Beglin, Jeremy Heaton and Carlos Torres.
The NIAA and One Nevada Credit Union awarded $20.000 in scholarship funds to graduating high school student-athletes in the Silver State.

“The spirit of the Silver State is embodied in high school athletics and activities,” said Bart Thompson, retiring Executive Director of the NIAA. “The Top Ten winners we honored this year achieved and maintained an exceptionally high level of excellence in all aspects of their lives. These will be our future leaders. They were dealt a horrible blow during the conclusion of their high school career. Yet, they rose up, persevered and moved forward at an outstanding level. They will continue to make a positive difference in our communities.”

Ten student-athletes in both Northern and Southern Nevada were selected for the scholarship.

Northern Nevada top 10 student athletes – Karen Beglin, Carson; Karli Burns, Fernley; Dylan Cleary, Incline High; Jeremy Heaton, Carson; Kili Lehmkuhl, North Tahoe; Kendra Lusk, Spring Creek; Carson Miller, Reed; Evelyne Reyes, Sparks High; Avery Strasdin, Churchill County; Carlos Torres, Carson.

Carson, Dayton cross country run in Gardnerville

The Douglas Class Races were able to beat the thick smoke Friday afternoon to open up the high school cross country season.

The Senators had three senior girls finish in the top 10 with McKenna Budd, Julia Kaiser and Claire Carter.

Seniors Dominic Valdez and Ethan Bauerle were seventh and eighth, respectively, for the Carson boys. The Senator freshman boys placed three in the top 10 in their race.

Sawyer Macy was fifth for the royal blue and white while Alex miner and Abraham Ortega were sixth and 10^th, respectively.

Whitney Winward was the top finisher for the Dust Devils, taking sixth in the sophomore girls’ race.

Senior Brenden Larkin was 24^th for Dayton in the senior boys’ race.

Smoke cancels Carson girls’ soccer opener

The Carson High girls’ soccer game Tuesday evening versus Spanish Springs was canceled due to smoke.

The programs agreed to flip their home games this season, meaning the Senators will travel to Spanish Springs Thursday to open their season. The cougars will return to Carson September 28.
