A suspect apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a standoff with Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Deputies on Monday.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Monday, Lyon County deputies were called to a residence on Pawnee Trail near Cimarron Trail in Stagecoach for a report of a domestic violence situation took place between adult family members, the release said. The caller advised that the dispute resulted in gunshots being fired at the residence.

Once Deputies arrived on scene, the family was taken to a safe location and a perimeter was established around the property. During the course of the investigation, deputies discovered that the suspect was inside of a large tent (Yurt) that he was apparently residing in. The Yurt was located in the backyard of the residence.

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Sparks Police Department SWAT Team as well as their Crisis Negotiations Team. Assets from the Sparks Police Department arrived to assist and both SWAT teams established a perimeter of the residence.

Deputies were able to establish verbal communication with the suspect inside the Yurt, who refused to come outside. For several hours deputies asked the suspect to exit the Yurt and come outside peacefully, but the suspect refused.  During the incident, the suspect stopped communicating with the deputies. After hours of attempting further contact, LCSO SWAT in conjunction with Sparks Police SWAT partially dismantled the Yurt.  Once they were able to enter the Yurt deputies discovered the suspect was deceased, inside the Yurt, with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Several firearms were found next the suspect.

Once the scene was secured, deputies then located what appears to be a grenade next to the decedent inside the Yurt. All personnel have backed away from the scene and area awaiting further assistance.  Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team determined the grenade located next to the decedent was inert. No other explosives were located and the scene was deemed safe.

There is no active threat to the community and all law enforcement personnel have cleared the scene; however, the investigation is on-going.

Public identification of the decedent will continue to be withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The deceased suspect has been identified however his identity is not being released pending next of kin notification, Lyon County Sheriff's Office said in a press release.
