Squinting against the 8 a.m. sun cresting over rows and rows of small, angled name plaques, Northern Nevada residents joined Gov. Steve Sisolak in honoring fallen veterans at the Battle Born Monument this morning.

“I will remember the far too many names of the far too many young ones memorialized here,” Sisolak said during his address. He mentioned that he often walks along the monument when he needs a break from his office in the nearby Capitol.

Along with Sisolak, speakers at the ceremony included Veteran and Nevada State Sen. Patricia Spearman, Nevada National Guard Maj. Gen. Ondra L. Berry, and Nevada Department of Veteran Services Director Katherine Miller.

“Citizens of the Battle Born State know all too well the cost of war,” Berry said, with the names of fallen state veterans catching light behind him. “May we always remember their courage and lead lives worthy of their sacrifice.”

Miller addressed the audience directly after Sisolak and Berry, adding to their comments.
“It is also right and proper that we remember the sacrifices of (veterans’) families,” she said.

The ceremony concluded with the placement of a wreath in the Battle Born Monument, while Carson High School student Nathan Parsons played taps.
