With Aug. 11 — 8/11 — this week, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada is reminding all Nevadans to call before digging.
That will enable underground utilities to be marked so electric and gas lines are not damaged.
When the 811 number is called, people are connected to USA North, Nevada which then notifies the appropriate utility company that the homeowner intends to dig. Professional utility locators are then sent to the homeowner or company address to find and mark the underground utilities to reduce the risk of hitting and damaging one of the lines. Callers can also go to www.811express.com at least two days before digging to get the lines marked.
A PUCN spokesman said in Nevada, an underground gas or electric line is damaged every day. Damaging a line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages.
Officials hope Aug. 11 will serve as a convenient reminder to people planning excavation projects.
