The city of Fallon celebrated its kickoff to the holiday season with a fireworks show after lighting the Christmas tree downtown on Friday night.
The annual First Responders of Churchill County Holiday Food Competition gathered 12 tons of food on Sunday for the Out of Egypt Food Pantry.
The agencies set up in front of Walmart and also had boxes to accept toys for the local Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.
The Churchill County Sheriff’s Office captured this year’s title with 7,260 pounds. The Fallon Churchill Volunteer Fire Department accepted 6,560 pounds; Banner Churchill Emergency Medical Services, 3,520 pounds; Fallon Police Department, 2,980 pounds; Churchill County Search and Rescue, 1,800 pounds; Nevada Highway Patrol, 1,640 pounds; Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribal Police Department, 280 pounds.
Since the annual competition began in 2016, the volunteers have collected 122,877 pounds of food.
