Derrick Johnson defeated Shane Shook, 224-168, to become the champion at the Northern Nevada Masters youth tournament Jan. 23. The tournament was held at Carson Lanes and was sponsored by the Carson Country U.S. Bowling Congress association. Johnson qualified as the Division A winner for the stepladder finals after bowling nine games (six games to qualify and three games in the next round of qualifying) during the day. Each game was bowled on a different pair of lanes. Shook qualified as the Division B winner after also bowling nine games and also winning three more games in the stepladder series. The divisions are determined by averages. Each of them won a $150 scholarship for winning the division and Johnson earned an additional $50 scholarship for the championship. In Division C, Aiden Melanaphy finished in first after six games (three games qualifier and three games semi-qualifier) and a stepladder final. Melanaphy also earned $150 scholarship with his win. Johnson also had the high game of the tournament with a 276 during the semi-final qualification round. In B Division, Landen Geiger had the high game with a 227. In C Division, Hunter Mueller had the high game with a 175.
