Thomas Heffron, who escaped along with 28 prisoners five years ago from the Nevada State Prison, was captured recently in Tillamook county, Oregon, but managed to give his captors the slip. In Oregon Heffron was known as “Sand Lake” Thompson. Several Indians and whites are on the track and it is thought he will manage to escape recapture.

The Storm. At an early hour yesterday morning a perfect hurricane awakened the light sleepers of this city. It was the most violent windstorm that has visited Carson during this season. Large frame buildings shook like aspen leaves, and it is indeed a surprise that no great damage resulted. A measure of snow began to fall without a moments cessation. At times the fall was so heavy you could not see fifty feet ahead.

Federal bureau of investigation operators today without warning started removing alien Japanese fishermen from the Los Angeles harbor and took out of the area nearly all of the 523 known to be there.

Carson City’s Hunneman hand pumper is coming home in glory this afternoon after a lengthy absence. Members of Warren Engine Company No. 1 were successful in efforts to purchase the pumper, which was used from 1863 to 1880. The pumper was lost while on display back east. It was purchased from an auction at Harrah’s Automobile collection for $7,500.

A syringe and six hypodermic needles, articles found during an archeological dig in Virginia City, are revealing important clues to life in Nevada in the 1800s. The articles were found in 2001 and had been lying underneath the floorboards in a small house east of Main Street in Virginia City. DNA samples revealed that at least four persons used the syringe which contained morphine.

A bill has been introduced in the House by Mr. H.G. Parker, relative to amending the act of two years ago in regard to the incorporation of Carson. The principal amendments deal with the powers of the Board of Trustees. The bill has been printed and referred to the Ormsby delegation.

The railroad accident. Considerable excitement was occasioned in this city yesterday morning by the receipt of a dispatch at the railroad office of a regular passenger train at Winter’s crossing, about a mile this side of Washoe. The dispatch stated the locomotive and express had jumped the track and several were injured. The wrecker was made ready and started at a lively rate for the scene (continued).

An alarm of fire from the Belcher mine called out the fire department about 6:15 this morning. The two hose houses at the mine were found to be in a blaze. There was no water in the Belcher hydrants and nothing could be done to save the hose houses or their contents. The lack of water was due to the Belcher tank being frozen — Chronicle.

The snow pack on Mount Rose Monday was 129 inches deep, the greatest depth recorded on Feb. 1 since measurements were first taken in 1969. The 11 foot snow depth compares to a 23-inch snow depth in 1977.

The legal battle over paying for the clean up of a gasoline leak from Cave Rock’s gas station was sent back to state court on Friday.
