Cars parked up and down Venturacci.
The line was long to get into the gym.
And by the time fights started, it was standing-room only for those arriving late.

Before the action started, a moment of silence was given for one of the Greenwave Takedown Club’s biggest supporters, Sonny Fowler, who died in 2020. His family, which included Guy Fowler, from left, Darcie Spero, Casie Fowler Gubler and Hadlee Gubler, was recognized during the final bell ceremony.

The annual Night of Fights returned for the first time since 2019 and did not disappoint at the city-county gym on Friday. Twelve bouts, including a couple of three-way fights, headlined the event.

The best bout of the evening went to the boys semifinal when Steve Moon (left) defeated Jose Ruiz.

The Night of Fights is the Greenwave wrestling program’s annual fundraiser to help reduce costs for the season, including tournament fees, travel and gear. Before Friday’s fights, businesses sponsored the fighters during last Monday’s Calcutta when Ted Guazzini served as the auctioneer. Coaches included the de Braga brothers – Trevor, Trent and Frank – Dan Shaw and Darren Lewis.

Jared Dooley was the night’s announcer.

In the first fight, Colin Homer defeated Wyatt Penfold as longtime coach and Hall of Famer Bert Serrano returned to the ring as the honorary referee.
