The Greenwave boys soccer team won its first game of the season after starting 0-3 in the opening-season tournament in Spring Creek.
Fallon defeated Lowry, 2-0, in its final game of the tournament on Aug. 27. Fallon, though, opened with a 4-0 loss to the hosts on the previous day followed by a 5-3 defeat to Elko and a 6-1 setback to Eldorado (Las Vegas).
Fallon opened crossover 3A league play last week, losing to South Tahoe, 7-0.
Fallon travels to Reno on Thursday and Truckee on Saturday.
The Lady Wave soccer team is still searching for its first win after going 0-4 against all Southern Nevada schools in the Spring Creek tournament.
Fallon lost to Equipo Academy after finishing regulation in a 2-2 tie before falling to Eldorado, 3-2, and Moapa Valley, 5-4. Fallon ended the tournament with a 5-1 loss to Pahrump Valley.
In its first 3A crossover game of the season, Fallon fell at South Tahoe, 8-0, last weekend. Fallon played Wooster on Monday and is at Hug on Saturday.
Tennis
The Greenwave boys and girls tennis teams opened the season with a split against Sparks and Wooster.
Fallon’s boys team defeated Sparks, 12-6, on Aug. 30 before falling at Wooster, 11-7, on Sept. 1.
The Lady Wave tennis team also defeated Sparks, 12-6, before falling to Wooster, 11-7.
The boys team hosted Incline on Tuesday while the girls traveled. The boys are on the road for the next two matches against Hug on Thursday and Truckee next Tuesday. The Lady Wave will play at home the next two matches.
Volleyball
The Lady Wave volleyball team avenged last year’s loss to Wooster by defeating the Colts in four sets on Aug. 29.
Fallon split the first two games, 25-16 and 21-25, before winning 25-9 and 25-18 to take the 3A crossover match.
Sophomore Vernita Fillmore finished with a double-double, recording 13 assists and 13 digs, to go along with a team-high six aces. Junior Reece Hutchings led the team in kills with nine and senior Jaqui Medrano added six.
Junior Kiley Wallace recorded four kills and senior Zowie Anderson had three. Medrano led the team in digs with 15 and Hutchings had 11. Wallace had four total blocks, and Kaitlynn Hoffmann finished with five aces and Hutchings had four.
Fallon hosts Truckee, the defending state champion, on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Oasis Academy volleyball team won its first game of the season in the Yerington Tournament last month.
The Bighorns defeated Sierra Sage Academy, 2-0, but fell to Sage Ridge, Fernley and Eureka. Oasis Academy lost to Pershing County from the 2A, 3-1, on Aug. 30. Oasis Academy hosted Coral Academy on Wednesday and is back at the city-county gym on Friday to face Sierra Lutheran at 5 p.m. The Bighorns also host Coleville on Monday at 5 p.m.
Cross country
The Greenwave boys cross country team finished third out of four teams in the 5,000-meter Fernley Roadhill Invitational on Aug. 25.
Senior Gerik Wassmuth led the team with a seventh-place finish of 23 minutes, 1 second, as North Valleys’ Austin Key had the best time at 19:05. Senior Cameron Christy was Fallon’s second-best time, clocking in at 24:32 for 10th. Sophomore Jacob Crane finished 24th at 29:17, freshman William McNeill was 34th at 34:33, sophomore Miles Henning was 38th at 36:53 and freshman Michael Liston was 40th at 44:38.
In last Thursday’s 4,100-meter Twilight Run at Ranch San Rafael, which included all schools regardless of classification, Wassmuth finished the course in 17:55 followed by Christy with a time of 18:53. Crane finished in 21:31 followed by Henning in 25:35.
For Oasis Academy, freshman Matthew Bird finished ninth with a time of 17:50. Freshmen Trevore Dunlap and Chase Ackerman finished the course in 26:59 and 36:36, respectively.
Both Fallon and Oasis Academy next compete in Friday’s North Tahoe Kiwanis Mountain Invitational.
