It seems that the hog ordinance went into force yesterday. Our young friend, Willie Clarke, caught one and despite its squealing turned it over to the sheriff and got a dollar for his trouble. Pitch in boys! Give us a big spree with the hogs and dogs to-day. One hog, one dollar. Dog, half price.

Keyser and Elrod’s stage upset last night coming down the grade. It was on a sand bank, and no one was hurt, and the delay was not over five minutes.

Word was received in this city yesterday that the contact vein on Boulder Hill, back of Markleeville, has been found and that the ore is exceedingly rich. For years miners have chased float over this mountain in hopes of finding the ledge from which the rich rock comes. Hundreds of specimens have been found, and a number of boulders have been discovered from time to time.

A 48-year-old Reno man was killed today when his car rammed a parked truck and trailer in a motel driveway in Reno, bringing the Nevada road death toll to 102.

It’s a long shot in hitting a $1 million jackpot on slot machines but State Gaming Control board member Richard Hyte estimates it could be as high as 4.2 billion to 1 in some cases. Hyte says under the worst conditions a video slot machine could be played 24 hours a day for 2,041 years before the jackpot would ever show up. Members of the industry took exception to bytes figures saying company machines payback 95-96 percent of the time.

Competition. Our colored friends of the polishing profession are having a lively competition from a number of reckless itinerant “shines” who black your boots for half the money. These little scrubs seem to be traveling, and in their meanderings altogether independent. The batch that are here to-day will be next week — God knows where.

Excitement in Eureka. There is considerable fat in the fire in Eureka over a rumpus in the board of county commissioners. The board is now being sued for something over $6,000 for the alleged improper expenditures of money.

Corbett has again gone down to defeat. This time it only took ten rounds to settle the question. Last evening in San Francisco he and Jeffries met at the Mechanics Pavilion and the place was fairly crowded.

A Pony Express centennial plaque dedication will take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum to honor the rough and tough Pony Express riders of Nevada history.
