Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong urged residents Tuesday afternoon to avoid the intersection of I-580 and Highway 50 East due to traffic issues created by a rollover of a concrete truck.

“Use other on-ramps and avoid the area,” Furlong told the Appeal as traffic was still reportedly backed up near the crash site.

The truck rolled over on the northbound I-580 on-ramp, leaving Highway 50, about 6:50 a.m., according to Carson City Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Mason. Firefighters had to extricate the driver from the wreckage, and the unidentified man was later taken by Care Flight to Renown in Reno.

“He was stable when we flew him,” Mason said.

Mason described how the extrication was difficult.

“We don’t get rolled-over trucks all the time,” he said. “It’s just a big cabin and a different style of cabin than we’re used to cutting on.”

Mason said the truck was carrying a load of concrete, but the load did not spill. There was a significant fuel leak, however, that the Nevada Department of Transportation contained, he said.

“As of an hour and a half ago, they were still working to get that truck upright and loaded,” he said.

Furlong said the location of the accident is under the jurisdiction of the Nevada Highway Patrol, which will be overseeing any investigation.

NDOT still had the on-ramp listed as closed as of 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.
