The Fallon and Oasis Academy volleyball teams open their season this weekend in Yerington.

The tournament runs Friday and Saturday and will be played in both the high school and middle school gymnasiums in Lyon County.

Thirty-two teams from all four regional classes, including the 5A, compete in the annual preseason tournament before league play begins over the next two weeks. Teams play against opponents in their pool Friday to determine seeding for Saturday’s action.

Fallon is coming off one of its best seasons in the last decade, winning the 3A East regular-season title before falling to South Tahoe in the regional tournament semifinals. Oasis Academy competed in the 2A last year after spending the previous seasons in the 1A.

Fallon will face North Valleys, Mammoth and Yerington JV in its pool, while Oasis Academy takes on McQueen, Smith Valley and Tonopah. Matches begin at 8 a.m.

Saturday, the top two teams in each pool advance to the Gold portion of the tournament, and the bottom-two teams advance to the Silver side. Teams will compete in a newly assigned pool against similar opponents based on Friday’s records. Matches start at 8 a.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

Along with volleyball, Fallon’s girls soccer team will head to Lake Tahoe for a two-day tournament before opening the season next weekend in Fallon.

The Greenwave faces Equipo Academy and Carson on Friday before taking on McQueen and Manogue on Saturday at South Lake Tahoe. Fallon finished second in the 3A East last year, won its first playoff game in a decade before falling in the regional semifinals.

The rest of the Oasis Academy (girls golf) and Fallon (girls golf, boys soccer, tennis and cross country) teams will begin their season later this month, except for girls golf, which has its first tournament next month.
