The Fallon and Oasis Academy volleyball teams began their season in the annual two-day Yerington tournament last weekend.
The Wave lost only one match out of six, notching a pair of wins Saturday against 3A East foes. Fallon swept Yerington and North Valleys before beating Mammoth in three on Friday to advance to Saturday’s gold bracket. Fallon, though, fell to Carson, 2-0, but beat both Elko and Spring Creek in three sets to finish the weekend with five wins.
Fallon is off until next week when it travels to North Valleys on Wednesday.
Over the weekend, sophomore Reagan Johnson led the team with 27 kills and a .500 attack percentage, averaging 2.7 kills per set. Senior Alexis Haggard finished with 10 kills, senior Kendra Dodge had nine and senior Halle Johnson added seven. As a team, finished with a .306 attack percentage.
Junior Lea Williams led the team with 11 aces, Johnson had eight, and senior Vernita Fillmore and sophomore Layla Walker each had six. Fallon converted 87.4 percent of its 198 serves.
Fallon didn’t record many blocks in the six matches as Johnson finished with three total blocks and Haggard had two of the team’s five. Williams led in digs with 23 as five players reached double figures. Senior Rayon Bartel recorded 15 digs, junior Dylan Faught had 14, Fillmore finished with 12 and Walker added 11.
Fillmore had a team-high 30 assists and Walker added 14 for Fallon, which averaged 5.9 assists per set.
For Oasis Academy, it finished third in its pool on Friday to advance to Saturday’s silver bracket. Results were incomplete and not available at press time.
The Bighorns are in action on Saturday at a tournament at Hug High School.
GIRLS SOCCER
Fallon’s girls soccer team was shut out in its four games at the Lake Tahoe tournament last weekend.
The Wave fell to Equipo Academy (2-0), Carson (1-0), McQueen (2-0) and Manogue (6-0). Fallon opens its home schedule this weekend with games against Pershing County on Friday and Battle Mountain on Saturday.
