Filing for local and statewide nonjudicial political offices begins Monday for two weeks.

Candidates filing for county offices will turn in their forms at the Churchill County Clerk’s office on 155 N. Taylor St. The county’s website is www.churchillcountynv.gov. Filing for city offices, which includes mayor and Ward 1, will be taken at the Fallon City Clerk’s office on 55 W. Williams Ave. The website is www.fallonnevada.gov.

Judicial filings for New River Township were held during the first two weeks of January. Incumbent Ben Trotter is seeking his second term, and he’s being challenged by Brenda Ingram, director of the county’s Court Services, and local optometrist Stuart Richardson.

Trotter was first elected in 2018, and prior to being elected as Justice of the Peace, he served as Churchill County sheriff for eight years.

Two other nonpartisan county races are for the Mosquito, Vector and Weed Abatement and the Churchill County School boards. Incumbents up for re-election on the Mosquito, Vector and Weed Abatement are Marion Jonte and Cindy McGarrah.

Three candidates — Greg Malkovich, Trisha Strasdin and Kathryn Whitaker — are coming to the end of their four-year terms on the school board. Malkovich, the board president, and Whitaker told the LVN they will seek re-election, while Strasdin said she will not run for her third and final term. Malkovich, the current board president, was first elected four years ago, while Strasdin and Whitaker were elected in 2016.

Two four-year partisan county commission seats are open. Justin Heath, who’s finishing his first term, represents District 1 and Harry “Bus” Scharmann was selected in 2022 to fill Greg Koenig’s unexpired term in District 3. Koenig was elected to Assembly District 38 two years ago, and he’s seeking re-election. Heath is a physician.

Two candidates have filed for District 1, Republicans Matt Hyde and Julie Guerrero-Goetsch. Hyde and Guerrero-Goetsch are in the middle of their four-year terms on the school board.

Eric Blakey has filed for District 3. He’s currently the chairman of the Churchill County Planning Commission.

Since Nevada law changed before last year’s election in 2022, the nonpartisan races for Fallon mayor and a council member from Ward 2 will be on the ballot. Current Mayor Ken Tedford and Councilwoman Karla Kent are up for re-election for four-year terms, and they told the LVN they will run for re-election.

Major statewide races are for U.S. senator and three six-year Supreme Court justice seats. First-term Sen. Jacky Rosen, a Democrat, is seeking re-election. Republicans who announced their intention to file against Rosen are Sam Brown, Tony Grady, Jeffrey Ross Gunter and Jim Marchant.

District races are for Congress, District 2, currently held by U.S. Rep. Mark Amodei, who said he is running for re-election. Carol Del Carlo is running for another term for the Board of Regents. Her area of responsibility covers a number of western Nevada counties including Churchill.

The Nevada Secretary of State’s office in Carson City will handle the filings for statewide and district offices. Their office is located at 101 N. Carson St., and their website is www.nvsos.gov.

The primary election for most offices is June 11 with early voting May 25 to June 7, and the general election is Nov. 5 with early voting Oct. 19 to Nov. 1.
