Grand Encampment of the Champions of the Cross. — As will be seen by reference to an advertisement in the Appeal, the first meeting of the Grand Encampment of the Independent Champions of the Red Cross, will meet here to-day. The installation exercises will be conducted in public. This new order of temperance reformers is full of life and vigor and growth; and that it will become a powerful and extensive society there can be little doubt.

A Night of Terror (continued from previous) I rushed to the orifice that served as a door, and peered into the gloom without, only to hear a wild, mocking shriek of demonically laughter, which reverberated around the ruins and sent a thrill of horror to my heart; returning to my fire I replenished it. At light I explored the premises but could discover nothing that would lead to a solution. I abandoned the accursed spot. Unbelievers in the supernatural will account for it in a dozen different ways. I will accompany any person t the place who may have the courage to unravel the mystery, only providing I shall be allowed to leave him there and camp elsewhere. J.F.E.

Nevada State Employees are busy making plans these days to attend the annual Sierra Range Chapter’s Nevada State Employees Association, barbecue and picnic. The gala affair is open to all and their guests. The feature of the annual state gathering will be a bathing beauty contest.

The Nevada Highway patrol will be setting up a sobriety checkpoint on the Mount Rose Highway (State Route 431) Sunday, the first of its kind to be used in Northern Nevada.

Shanghai rooster: That rooster of Ivancevich’s is getting to be a regular loafer. He doesn’t stay home like an honest rooster, but wanders over to the Capitol, up to the courthouse and all around. The first thing he knows he will be taking a stroll through Chinatown, but if he ever gets away from there in as good shape as he went, he will be the first stray rooster that ever got off that well.

Round about town: Clem Berry’s “Green Corn Shout” is now heard on the streets.

While a Reno man was arranging for his late wife’s funeral, some wretch broke into his house and robbed him of the valuables.

All sorts: A man who was a native of Hawaii after seeing a man riding his bicycle said that it must be very nice to “walk sitting down.”

The wings of a flying machine collapsed at Brussels. The inventor, Engineer Linenthall, had a fall of 200 feet. He was severely injured.

Advertisement: “Sky-Vue Drive-in Theater, ‘Above and Beyond,’ with Robert Taylor and Eleanor Parker. Also playing, ‘The Disney Festival,’ cartoon and news.”

Avalanche and Doc Benton’s stage: By great exertions, enough of the debris had been removed to allow Benton’s Lake Bigler stage to get through the pass effected by the terrible avalanche of water.

Round about town: The city authorities declined to heed the warning of the newspapers relative to tickle grass. The infernal stuff threatens to be a bigger nuisance than ever.

The Washoe County ranchers consider 16 hours a day’s work.

All sorts: The Orphans Home children had a picnic at Washoe Lake. Superintendent Grimmon caught a 12-pound landlocked salmon, sea bass or some such fish.

Parade theme: “Ever Alert,” the slogan of the Ormsby County demonstration project for child safety, is now in its second year and will be the theme of children’s parade down Carson Street. It will be headed by Cactus Tom, radio figure. Music will be provided by the Greco accordion band of Reno.

Kids go to the circus: Car-Val-Ta Shrine Club will provide transportation for Carson City children, ages 6 through 14 to the Shrine Circus. Bill Dial, chairman, is in charge of finding transportation. He requests any parents or others who can take a car to Reno and back to contact him. The circus is free of charge to drivers.

Primary school: The outer walls of the new wing of the schoolhouse are so far along that they are getting a coat of priming. This is correct for a primary school. We notice a chimney on the west end of the building. This is intended to prevent the rooms from contracting the bad habit, indulged in by Mr. Howe, of smoking.

Round about town: The Indians will now work to get a ticket to the circus.

Do not fail to take your children to see Sampson, the largest elephant in the world, and let them have a ride. He is capable to accommodating 100 people without any inconvenience whatsoever. He will be here with Cole’s great Circus.

All sorts: C.F. McGlashan has captured 100,000 frogs for his new pond. He intends to supply the San Francisco market.

Truckee is one of the liveliest towns on the river since the strike. All of the mills and factories are in full operation and therefore employ a large force of men.

Chamber: The directors of the Carson Chamber of Commerce met to organize officially for the 1954-55 year and to install new officers. They are Neal Van Sooy, president and Jim McVay, vice-president and Audrey Bell, treasurer.
