Volunteers with the Salvation Army were hoping to see more donations during the 27th annual turkey drop Thursday at Max Casino in downtown Carson City.

A little after 12 p.m., they had only 13 turkeys, and they were planning to receive 260 turkeys by Friday evening.

Along with turkeys were Thanksgiving items dropped in large bins and a red kettle for monetary donations.

A handful of volunteers and coordinators with the nonprofit expected to see more traffic in the evening hours for the donation drive. Meals were planned to be distributed to those in need starting next week.

Buffy Linkul, office coordinator for the Salvation Army, said the holiday food items go right back to the community.

When asked why someone should donate, Linkul said: “Because it benefits our community members here in Carson City, Douglas County and Lyon County.”

The drive was set to run through 6 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. Max Casino is located at 900 S. Carson Street.
