Idyllic spring-like conditions in Carson City on Friday will not last the weekend if the National Weather Service forecast comes to pass.

A storm is expected to arrive in the capital city late Saturday bringing a 70 percent chance of precipitation by Sunday morning, according to the NWS. Temperatures could drop by nearly 20 degrees, with snow and/or rain possible.

Though no significant snow accumulation is expected on valley floors, a winter weather advisory for Lake Tahoe and Mono County projected 2-4 inches of snow in the Tahoe Basin and 6-10 inches along the Sierra Crest.

“Cold trough brings a radical drop in temperatures Sunday, along with a round of snow for the mountains and light rain/snow showers for Western Nevada,” the NWS said Friday.

While the Monday morning commute could be affected, a break in storms is likely to occur Monday evening into Tuesday. Storm activity could return Tuesday afternoon.

“Next storm projected for Wednesday into Thursday with additional mountain snow and rain/snow showers for Western Nevada,” according to the NWS.

The weather could boost a below-average snowpack. As of Friday, NRCS snow telemetry sites showed the Lake Tahoe Basin at 85 percent of median snow water equivalent (SWE) for the date, and the Carson River Basin at 83 percent of the median amount for the date.
