Carson City could see rain and snow in the next week but the National Weather Service is warning of “hazardous weather conditions” Thursday due to the likelihood of high winds.
The NWS (weather.gov) has issued a high wind watch starting Thursday at 11 a.m. and continuing through 8 p.m., warning of southwest winds 25-35 mph with gusts exceeding 65 mph in wind prone areas.
“Gusty winds will blow around unsecured objects,” the NWS said. “Tree limbs could be blown down and power outages may result. Travel could be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve. Areas of blowing dust may reduce visibility, especially near deserts, playas, and sinks.
“Winds may knock down burned trees in the Davis Fire burn area.
The Davis Fire started in Davis Creek Regional Park in Washoe Valley on Sept. 7. The wildfire eventually burned over 5,800 acres, damaged multiple structures and placed 14,000 people under evacuation notices.
“Now is the time to secure loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, holiday decorations, and trash cans before winds increase which could blow these items away,” the NWS said. “The best thing to do is prepare ahead of time by making sure you have extra food and water on hand, flashlights with spare batteries and/or candles in the event of a power outage.”
