Carson baseball falls at Colfax

When a team has pitching staff that strikes out 12 and allows just four hits, it rarely loses. But when a team has a pitching staff that walks 11, it rarely wins.

That was the case for the Carson High baseball team as seven Senator pitchers combined to strike out 12 while giving up just four hits, but walked 11 in an 11-10 loss at Colfax, Calif., on Tuesday.

Carson led 7-1 and 10-4, but eight of the 11 walks Senator pitchers issued came in the last two innings. Colfax scored six runs in the sixth and once in the seventh for the win.

Willie Bowman belted a three-run home run and Cameron Leck and Jason Alcasas added solo shots for Carson. But Colfax had a grand slam homer in the sixth that helped it come back.

"We went into the game knowing we would throw as many kids as we could," Carson coach Ron McNutt said. "We didn't play poorly overall. It's just one of those things where we just didn't get the ball over the plate. There's no defense for that. It's a little discouraging, but that's part of baseball."

Colfax used five walks and one hit - the grand slam - to tie the score in the sixth. Colfax scored the winning run in the seventh on Carson's only error of the game and three walks.

Eric Melendez and Jeff Hurzel each went 2-for-3 and Aaron Henry added a double for Carson (5-1-1).
