Carson hockey takes 2nd in tourney

The Carson Senator varsity inline hockey team settled for second in the Northern Nevada postseason tournament held over the weekend.

Carson finished the season at 18-3-1, winning the preseason tournament with a 4-1 mark and the regular season title with an 11-0-1 record. The Senators went 3-2 in the postseason event.

No. 1 seeded Carson opened with a 5-4 win over Reno in an overtime shootout. Goalie Steve Calaorio stopped all four Reno shots and Ryan Dwyer and Mark Sassi scored in the shootout for the Senators.

Carson then overcame a 5-1 deficit to beat Douglas 7-5 behild goals from Dwyer, Charlie McQuarrie and Dustin Zastre.

The Senators then met No. 2 seed Reed and lost 7-2. Carson came back to beat Douglas 6-4 to advance to the championship round. Jason Hastings, Bud Kop, Steven Wear and Derek Zastre led the way.

Carson and Reed met for the sixth time in the championship round. Reed won 6-3 to win the tournament and the season series against the Senators 3-2-1.

Carson's junior varsity team finished third in the postseason event with a 3-2 mark. Carson finished with a 16-4-1 mark after winning the preseason tournament title (4-0) and placing third in the regular season (9-2-1).

In the postseason event, No. 3 seed Carson beat Manogue 7-1 before losing to No. 2 seed Bishop, Calif., 6-3. Carson came back to beat Elko 10-3 and No. 1 seed Douglas 3-0 before being eliminted in a 7-2 loss to Reed.
