Quilt display to open March 6 at WNCC

"Home Means Nevada," featuring challenge quilts from the Carson Valley Quilt Guild, will be on display in the College Gallery at Western Nevada Community College Bristlecone Building, March 6-30.

Quilts on display will reflect the quilt makers' impressions of what Nevada means to them. The challenge means all quilts must contain at least one blue fabric and one silver fabric, Nevada's state colors, in a recognizable form on the front, and be no larger than 30 inches per side.

An artist's reception in the gallery will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. March 6.

This display is in preparation for a larger quilt show, "Home Means Nevada," June 17-18 at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall. Approximately 175 quilts made by members of the guild will be on display, along with the Hoffman Challenge of dolls, a national traveling exhibit.

The Carson Valley Quilt Guild, an educational non-profit organization, has more than 200 members from Carson City, Dayton, Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley.

Members make community quilts for people who lose their homes in fires, as well as other charitable contributions. They have monthly Saturday workshops at the WNCC Douglas campus, and bring in national quilting teachers who lecture on different quilting techniques.

Hospice overview

presented March 8

Marilynn Uhart, a St. Mary's Hospice chaplain, will present "When there is no longer hope for the body, there's hope for the spirit," a discussion on Hospice living, from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m. March 8 at the Carson City Senior Citizens Center. Topics include the hospice philosophy, criteria, and services, with a question and answer period.

Museum hosts Women's History Month

The Nevada State Museum's Store is hosting a Women's History Month reception and book signing on March 15, 2006, from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Attending the reception will be several authors, including Patty Cafferata, Jan Cleere, Barbara Gegne, Shiela Lonie, Jan Pierson, Dixie Westergard, and Sally Zanjani.

How to submit society announcements

Anniversaries published are celebrations of a minimum of 25 years of marriage, and in 5-year increments thereafter of the anniversary of a wedding.

Forms are available at the reception desk of the Nevada Appeal and may be submitted with a quality color photo, and are published in the order received, as space allows, at no charge.

Engagement and wedding announcements are also published by the Nevada Appeal, at no charge. Quality photos, color or black and white, may be submitted with each announcement and should be picked up at the reception desk after the announcement has run.

Wedding announcements should be submitted within six months after the wedding; engagement announcements should be submitted as soon as possible after the day of engagement.
