WNCC hosts 'MoneyTalk' investment lecture


Western Nevada Community College is hosting a free lecture titled "MoneyTalk" at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Reynolds Center for Technology, Room 103. Participants can learn the basics of understanding and using investment statistics. Call 445-4278.




Open-space advisory committee meets tonight


The Open Space Advisory Committee will meet at 6 p.m. tonight in the Sierra Room, Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.


Topics include possible recommendation of the Unified Pathway Master Plan and contract proposal by Lewis & Associates for preliminary design and route selection for trail near the V&T railway route; authorization to pursue agreement for purchase of "Buzzy's Ranch" property; presentation of the Carson River Aquatic Recreation Plan from Mexican Dam to Dayton Valley State Park.




Bridal Extravaganza set for The Appeal


More than 60 wedding professionals will be at the Bridal Extravaganza from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the second floor of the Nevada Appeal, 580 Mallory Way. Admission is free.


There will be florists, photographers, wedding reception sites, caterers, videographers, DJ's, honeymoon specialists, wedding cake and formal-wear specialists and horse-drawn carriage companies exhibiting their wares.


More than $5,000 in door prizes will be given away, including free wedding cakes, dinners, gift certificates and five separate honeymoon trips for two to Hawaii. 'Home Means Nevada' shows at WNCC gallery


"Home Means Nevada," a selection of challenge quilts from the Carson Valley Quilt Guild, will be on display in the College Gallery at WNCC Carson City's Bristlecone Building from March 6-30. The artist's reception will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. March 6 in the gallery. Call 445-3238.




'Pyrotechniques' to show at WNCC's Carson campus


From March 6-30, "Pyrotechniques," a collection of raku, gas-fired and wood-fired stoneware pots by Joe Winter will be on display at the Bristlecone building's main gallery at WNCC.

Reno


UNR offers Comstock history course


The University of Nevada, Reno will host a class titled "Special Problems: History of the Comstock: Ethnic Groups on the Comstock"


The course complements the general History of the Comstock course. Focus is on the heyday of the Comstock region during the 1860s and 1870s.


The class is 4-10 p.m. April 7 at the university's Redfield Campus, 18600 Wedge Parkway, and from 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. April 8, when students will take a required field trip to Virginia City (they must supply their own transportation).


Course fee: $102, one undergraduate credit; $140, one graduate credit. Early registration is required.

Arboretum hosts gardening mini-series


Northern Nevada newcomers and native gardeners may benefit from the gardening expertise of horticulturist Bill Carlos during a series of six weekly workshops at the Wilbur D. May Arboretum and Botanical Gardens at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.


All workshops will be held from 9 a.m.-noon. Cost is $125 for the entire series, or $25 per seminar. Refreshments and materials are provided.

Lake Tahoe


'Bears by the Lake' to benefit charitable organizations


Local charitable organizations are urged to apply by March 15 to receive funds from the first-ever "Bears by the Lake A CeleBEARtion!" featuring between 35-40 life-size fiberglass bear forms decorated by regional and local artists.


An online auction of the bears will take place, with a minimum bid of $2,000 each, in September after a public display from May 17 through Labor Day.


The funds will be donated to local charities.
