Registration starts for Latch Key program

The 2005-06 school year begins Aug. 24 for most Carson City schools.

The Latch Key program, sponsored through the Carson City Recreation Division, will begin Aug. 22 with all-day care at the Carson City Community Center gymnasium on Mondays and Tuesdays.

The cost will be included in the regular Latch Key fee for that week.

Returning Latch Key participants may register from 8 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday and Friday in the recreation office. New participants may register from 8-10 a.m. Saturday in the community center lobby. Enrollment is limited. Registration will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full. Once the program fills, a waiting list will be started.

• Before-School Latch Key: This program is held from 6:30 a.m. until school buses pick the children up for school. Breakfast is not provided and children will not arrive in time for the breakfast program at school. If necessary, pack a ready-to-eat breakfast for your child. Children must arrive at the community center by 7:45 a.m. to ensure pick up by the bus. Cost is $15 per week per child.

• After-School Latch Key: This program is designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade and is held at all public elementary schools except Empire from 2:45-6 p.m. Parents must pick up their children by 6 p.m. A $5 late fee will be assessed for every 15 minutes after 6 p.m. Cost is $30 per week per child.

• Kinder Latch Key: This program is available to all morning and afternoon kindergartners attending public elementary schools in Carson City. Hours are 7:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. for afternoon kindergartners and 11:15 a.m.-2:45 p.m. for morning kindergartners. Program staff will transport participants to or from school. Before- and after-school programs are available to all kindergartners for an additional cost. Cost is $35 per week per child.

• Middle-School Program: This program is held in the gym at the community center. Participants will be picked up from school and brought to the community center by Latch Key staff. The program operates from the time the children are picked up from school until 6 p.m. Activities such as arts and crafts, sports tournaments, field trips, science programs, cooking classes, team building, outdoor education classes and homework help will be provided. The program will be provided for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders attending either Carson Middle School or Eagle Valley Middle School. Cost is $35 per week per child.
