Northern Nevada's blood supply low

Blood supplies are still low and donors are needed. Those who donate in April can enter to win a drawing for a $40 gift certificate for Red's Old 395 Restaurant, a $25 gift certificate for the Station House, or a $25 gift certificate for Wal-Mart. For donor convenience, United Blood Services is open until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, with pizza being served, courtesy of Pizza Factory, from 4-7 p.m. On Saturdays United Blood Services is open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and a continental breakfast for donors is served. 'Stand Tall' club slates games, contest

Carson High's Stand Tall club will be conducting activities for Carson High School youth during lunch today and Friday to promote Alcohol Awareness Month. A milk-drinking contest, a contest to knock down beer cans, a race involving fatal vision goggles, and throwing pies at teachers are among some of the activities planned.

"Stand Tall" and the Carson High PTSA are also sponsoring a contest for Alcohol Awareness month. The topic is "How Alcohol Use or Abuse has Affected My Life." Students grades ninth through 12th from any school, or homeschool, may submit a two-page essay, original photograph, or visual arts project to teacher Michele Quintero. Room 305, the Tech Center, by April 28. Cash prizes of $75 will be awarded for each category and are provided by the Carson High PTSA.

BLM hosts Women's History Month speaker

The Carson City Field Office of the Bureau of Land Management at 5665 Morgan Mill Road will be hosting a special Women's History Month program at 10 a.m. today. The speaker will be Katie Pollock, a Hong Kong native.

Lecture about ancient Peru tonight

The fourth part of Western Nevada Community College's free cultural series, "Faces, Voices, and Stories," will be a lecture by Dr. Hal Starratt entitled "Art and Archaeology of Ancient Peru," starting at 7 p.m. today at WNCC's Reynold's Center for Technology in room 103. Call 445-3238.

Mansion hosts reception for Hunt

There will be a cocktail reception honoring Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt for her dedication to Nevada's tourism and economic development from 6-8 p.m. Friday, at the Bliss Mansion, 608 Elizabeth St. The public is invited to attend to show support for her election as governor. Supervisors to mull condo ordinance

The Carson City Board of Supervisors today is tentatively scheduled to introduce a condominium ordinance after 1:30 p.m.

This ordinance will provide apartment owners with requirements that must be fulfilled before putting the units up for sale as condominiums.

Among considerations: How to best ease the transition from rental to owner-occupied dwellings for the people who would be displaced - low- and moderate-income renters unable to purchase the units they occupy.

Seniors and families with children traditionally have a rough time finding rentals. The ordinance also will seek to reduce and ease the impact of displacement. Adoption will occur at a subsequent meeting. The meeting is in the Sierra Room, Community Center, 851 E. William St. Call 887-2100.
