Brooke Conway, 17, a junior at Laurel Springs Private School in Ojai, Calif., has been accepted to attend the National Honors Convocation on Medicine at Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles from June 30-July 9.
Brooke, a Carson City native, takes all advanced placement classes and has a 4.0 grade-point average at Laurel Springs. Through a distance-education program, she is taking calculus 2 and Spanish from Western Nevada Community College.
Brooke is a current and past member of Who's Who in American and the National Society of High School Scholars. Her future goals include entering the wakeboarding circuit and studying sports medicine.
Students to the National Honors Convention are selected for their high academic performance and leadership. During the convention, Brooke will spend 10 days at Loyola focusing on academic pursuits. Each NHC program begins with a leadership curriculum and culminates with a hands-on career-focused practicum, which in Brooke's case will be on medicine.
The Honors Convocation leadership curriculum is presented in partnership with Churchill Leadership, founded by Sir Winston Churchill's granddaughter, Celia Sandys.
Churchill Leadership has distilled Churchill's essential principles and leadership strategies into behavioral-based programs which show people how to develop their leadership skills and take action.
Following the leadership curriculum, students turn their new knowledge into skills by working in career-focused groups to make and present diagnostic patient determinations, etc.
