Reno grand jury indicts Carson City man in mail theft

A Carson City man will be in federal court next month after being indicted by a Reno grand jury on four charges related to the theft of mail from Carson City.

Everett William Green, 36, was indicted March 29, on three counts of embezzlement of letters and one count of possession of stolen property for "375 letters or items that had been contained in a letter, which had been stolen, taken embezzled and abstracted from the mail."

Green, a contracted employee with United State Postal Service, carried mail between Carson City's two post offices. Between December and March 7 when he was "apprehended by postal inspectors," Green allegedly helped himself to greeting card envelopes and spent the cash or gift cards contained within.

Postal Inspector Tom Brucklacher said investigators don't believe Green attempted to cash any checks he found in the mail, nor does it appear Green took anything other than greeting card envelopes, easily recognizable by their size, shape and colors.

Brucklacher said 90 percent of the items stolen appeared to have been stolen from outgoing mail from Ormsby Station on Highway 50 East.

The indictment lists six specific outgoing addresses - four in Sparks, one in Wisconsin and one in California. Green was served Thursday with a summons to appear in Reno's U.S. District Court before federal magistrate Judge Robert McQuaid at 3 p.m. May 8.

Brucklacher said some of the items allegedly recovered from Green were without addresses. Anyone who sends or receives mail through Ormsby Station and is concerned about delivery of items can call the Reno office at 328-6040.
