Federal charges may be pending against three men arrested in connection with the theft of mail from Carson City boxes, a postal inspector said Monday.
Postal Inspector Steve Hofheins said he will be submitting a case against David Scott Killen, 23, Dylan Gregory, 22, and Tristan Ledford, 19, to the U.S. Attorney's Office for charges of possession of stolen mail, a federal offense.
"I'm going to submit on it, I don't know what the outcome will be," he said.
Killen, Gregory and Ledford were arrested Dec. 9 after a homeowner on Carson City's west side reported to police that he'd heard his mailbox opening at 2:30 a.m. The man then followed a vehicle he saw driving away from his home and witnessed the passenger jump in and out of the car at different homes and rifle through mailboxes. When police pulled the vehicle over, Killen was at the wheel, and Gregory and Ledford were passengers.
Mail found inside the vehicle and statements made after their arrests indicated the trio was looking for credit card applications and holiday cards containing money, according to police reports.
No charges were filed by Carson City against Ledford, who lives nearby where the alleged thefts took place.
Gregory pleaded guilty on Friday to two counts of gross misdemeanor opening, reading or publishing a sealed letter or telegram.
Killen is awaiting a January sentencing for a February 2007 shooting spree in which he shot out the windows of a number of businesses along Highway 395 from Carson to Gardnerville. A preliminary hearing in the theft case that was set for Friday, was continued and a new date has not been set.
