One man pleads in Carson City mail theft case

One of two men charged in the theft of mail from west side Carson City mailboxes pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanors on Thursday.

Dylan Gregory, 22, pleaded to two counts of gross misdemeanor opening, reading or publishing a sealed letter or telegram. Charges of felony conspiracy to obtain and use personal identifying information to harm or impersonate another person and attempt to obtain and use personal identifying information to harm or impersonate will not be pursued as part of the plea agreement.

Gregory was arrested Dec. 9 along with co-defendant David Scott Killen, 23, and Tristan Ledford, 19, both of Carson City.

A homeowner reported to police that he'd heard his mailbox opening at 2:30 a.m. and when he went outside he saw a vehicle driving away.

The man said he followed the vehicle and witnessed the passenger jump in and out of the car and rifle through mailboxes each time the car would stop. When police pulled the vehicle over, Killen was at the wheel, and Gregory and Ledford were passengers.

Mail found inside the vehicle and statements made after their arrests indicated the trio was looking for credit card applications and holiday cards containing money.

No charges are expected to be filed against Ledford, who lives nearby where the alleged thefts took place.

A preliminary hearing for Killen that was scheduled to take place on Thursday was continued. A new date has yet to be set.

Killen is awaiting a January sentencing for a February 2007 shooting spree in which he shot out the windows of a number of businesses along Highway 395 from Carson to Gardnerville.
