Carson tennis teams sweep Truckee

Diane Baker Roberts didn't want to make the same mistake to open the season that she did last year.

Last season in its opener, Carson had a lead against Truckee when Roberts began substituting and the Senators ended up losing the match. Roberts, the CHS coach, didn't make the same mistake this year as Carson beat Truckee 12-6 on Tuesday at CHS to open the season. "That's why I didn't do a lot of substituting," Roberts said.

Carson won seven of nine singles matches, which helped Roberts evaluate the status of her team.

"It gives me something to look at," she said. "Our singles definitely pulled it through for us."

Carson's next real test shouldn't come until Sept. 12 when it travels to South Tahoe.

"We do have some time to decide how I'm really going to set our girls," Roberts said.

Christa Casci and Lisa Midboe swept their singles matches against Truckee, with Casci winning 6-2, 6-0, 6-0 and Midboe winning 6-2, 6-0, 6-0. Tiffany Moore also won 6-0.

In doubles, Jenni Hood and Kristi Philippi won 6-0, 6-4, Emily Wang and Elise Hansen won 6-4, Meagan Carter and Kristen Charles won 6-4, 6-2.

"You can't ask for anything better than that, right?," said Roberts about opening the year with a win.

CARSON BOYS 14, TRUCKEE 4

Carson rolled to the win at Truckee winning all 12 matches in the first two rounds.

Spencer Brinson won his only match in singles 6-3 while Jeff Van Epps won 6-0, 6-1 and Jordan Rogers won 6-2. Also in singles, Gordon Lee and Ben Henningson both won 6-1.

In doubles, Bryt Lewis and Brad Cobler won 6-2, Nick Smallman and Chris Wear won 6-3, 6-4, Nathaniel Hamer and James Pelz won 6-2 and Hamer also teamed with Grant Jeppson to win 7-6 (7-1), Alex Wing and Spencer Trapp won 6-0, Tom Dudley and Jordan Miller won 6-3, Ian Gentner and Pelz won 6-3 and Tom Holenbeck-Pringle and Rick Nguyen won 6-2.

Tyler Wing and Scott Huynh both played well in singles before they each fell 3-6.

"I was looking to try to evaluate the team to get rid of the jitters," said Carson coach Pat Houlihan about the opener. We felt pretty good about our first match."

DOUGLAS GIRLS BEAT SPANISH SPRINGS

After the match was tied 9-9, Douglas won four of the six tiebreakers to take the win. This year if matches end in a tie, three singles and three doubles will play six tiebreakers to decide the winner.

In the tiebreakers, Samantha Barns won 7-0, Lauren Seymour and Sarah Barnhill won 7-3, Kristy Jilk and Cesarina Seglia won 9-7 and Elyssa Cofano and Amanda Lugone won 7-4.

Jilk and Seglia swept their doubles matches, winning 6-4, 6-1, 6-4, Barns won in singles 6-3, 7-5, Patricia Salazar won 6-0 in singles, Seymour and Barnill won 6-1, 6-4 and Morgan Barone won 6-4 in singles.
