RTC will be offering special service schedules today for Labor Day. RTC RIDE will run on a Sunday schedule. RTC Intercity between Reno and Carson City will run on a regular weekday schedule. Sierra Spirit, the free downtown bus service, will run on a Monday schedule. The RTC business offices will be closed.

Cultural Affairs grant applications due Oct. 2


The application deadline for grants for the Commission for Cultural Affairs is Oct. 2, 2006. Grants support the rehabilitation of historic buildings to be used as cultural centers.


Applicants must be governmental agencies or nonprofit organizations, and applications will be reviewed in March of 2007.

The Carson City Democrats will be meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at 709 E. Robinson St., at the State of Nevada Employees Association Conference Room.

Michael's to give away basket today


Michael's Arts and Crafts Store, located at 911 Topsy Lane, will be giving away a free "Creative Pumpkin Basket" today at 3 p.m.


Participants aged 18 and over may put their names into the box for the giveaway up until the time of the drawing. For information call 267-1938.


Virginia City


Virginia City salutes firefighters in Labor Day Parade


Virginia City's annual Labor Day Parade will be a salute to firefighters, with Storey County Fire Fighters Local 4227 as grand marshals. All area paid and volunteer firefighters are invited to take part. The parade will begin at noon today down C Street.


Entries will line up at the Fourth Ward School at 11:30 a.m. Late entries are welcome.


There will also be a Civil War Reenactment, and a free concert at the Delta Parking Lot from 3 to 7 p.m. today.

'Living With Fire' series continues in Lyon County


The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the Central Lyon County Fire Protection District are teaming up to provide homeowners with information on how to reduce the threat of wildfire to their homes at two workshops; 7 p.m. Tuesday at Silver Springs High School and at 7 p.m. Thursday at Dayton High School.
