Carson girls take third place in event

The Carson High girls basketball team used a 14-0 run in the fourth quarter to pull away for 54-45 win over Ponderosa, Calif., in the third place game of the Sapphire division in the West Coast Jamboree at Pittsburgh, Calif.

After Ponderosa closed to within 37-34 with five minutes, 45 seconds left in the game, the Senators went on a 14-0 run to make it 51-34 with two minutes left. Carson was able to win despite being plagued by turnovers and going 9-of-20 from the foul line. "We had way too many turnovers," Carson assistant coach Ron Tamori said.

The Senators (9-3) took a 10-8 lead when Gina Bianchi scored at the end of the first quarter. "We came out kind of sluggish," Tamori said.

Bianchi hit a three-pointer and scored another basket to give Carson a 22-14 lead. Kailey Taylor scored at the end of the half to give the Senators a 26-17 halftime lead.

Bianchi scored on an assist from Christa Casci to make it 29-21 and Megan Kilty scored at the end of the third quarter to make it 33-25. After Ponderosa closed to within 37-34, Brandi Vega and Anna Macquarie scored baskets to spark Carson's 14-0 run.

Peacon and Vega made the all-tournament team. Peacon had 21 points and six rebounds, Bianchi scored 12 points, Kilty had six points, five rebounds and six steals, Vegan had six points, four rebounds and five steals and Kaitlin Burroughs added five points.

CHS JV GIRLS 39

Carson fell just short in the State Farm Tournament's third place game. Tiandra Hudson had 13 points and nine rebounds, Yvonne Hollett, who made the all-tournament team, scored 11 points and Emily Field added five points.

CHS FROSH GIRLS 23, DAMONTE 19

Carson took third place in the State Farm Tournament with the win over Damonte Ranch. Natalie Morrow, who made the all-tournament team, scored eight points and Yadira Duarte and Marcela Watson each added four points.
