Valentine's Day is right around the corner. Sally Zola recently e-mailed me about Karen Hurles and all the Carson Soroptimist members who want to reach out to local elementary children in a way most people never think of.

For the last two Wednesday Soroptimist meetings at the Carson Nugget, women have been collecting boxes of valentines from members to give to needy schoolchildren. The public is asked to help, too.

You should see a second-grader or fifth-grader get these valentines, and how thrilled they are to give something to their friends.

So far they have received more than 65 boxes of valentines for the six elementary schools for children to have a very special holiday.

Valentine's Day will include music in the air with the Mile High Jazz Band's "Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts." Treat your special valentine to a night of great jazz and dancing at Comma Coffee Feb. 14.

I stopped in Comma Coffee the other day to enjoy a great mocha and check out the dance floor. It's plenty big, and the atmosphere will be all hearts and great jazz presented by the 17-member band.

So grab those comfy dancing shoes and get ready for a wonderful night.

Also for Valentine's Day, you can check out the great wine tasting for couples at Empire Ranch.

I went a couple of weeks ago with my good friend Jeanine Wittenberg. The wine and food were outstanding.

I ran into Maize Jesse, who has written in her Appeal column how much fun she had also.

On Valentine's Day, they are doing it right with sampling of wine and complimentary appetizers that are like a full meal - I wish I had known that last time!

So if you want to surprise your wife or sweetheart, this is a great night out.
